Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?
Structural integration in actionSome parts of the treatment may be uncomfortable or painful depending upon injuries and chronic stress as well as other factors, however we will work at whatever level is comfortable for you. Any discomfort is far outweighed by the results of the treatment.

Do the changes last?
Yes! Unlike many other treatments where it is necessary to continue treatment ad infinitum, the changes resulting from SI are permanent. However, as life changes, so our bodies change in response. Occupational and emotional stress, injuries and accidents can all have detrimental effects on us and so it may be necessary to have more treatment.

Do I have to have the whole 10 sessions?
No, although it is recommended that you have all the 10 sessions to receive the full benefit, you can stop treatment whenever you want, or you can take a break and come back later. Even one session can be hugely beneficial.

Do I have to have the sessions weekly?
No, a week or a fortnight between sessions is what we recommend but you can have them closer together or further apart as you like. Often holidays, work commitments or financial considerations dictate the frequency of treatments.

If I come back for more treatment, will I need another 10 series?
Structural integration in actionNo. If further treatment is necessary we offer a series of three sessions, or a single session as required. We also offer Advanced SI which is a series of five sessions. This is only available after a full 10 series.

Can I repeat the 10 series?
Yes, you can repeat the 10 sessions and gain further benefits although we recommend at least six months between each series to allow your body to integrate the work.

Is it different from chiropractic work and osteopathy?
Osteopathy and chiropractic work tends to focus on the bones, particularly the spine, whereas SI is concerned with rehabilitating muscle and connective tissue. By working on the soft tissues of the body we create space for the bones to realign themselves, much like an old fashioned tent. By adjusting the guy ropes (muscle and connective tissue) the tent poles (skeleton) is realigned.

Does age matter?
Structural integration in actionStructural Integration is suitable for children and adults of all ages. Between us, we have worked with toddlers through to people in their 90s. Many practitioners have worked on babies and even newborns. Children’s treatment is shorter than adult’s and rarely involves the full ten sessions. Older people can experience quite dramatic change as many years worth of accumulated tension and muscle shortening is relieved.

I have had a hip replacement, can I still have Structural Integration?
Yes, in fact Structural Integration can be extremely beneficial in dispersing scar tissue after an operation. People often develop a limp after having a hip replaced as the good side compensates during the healing process. SI can realign the body, improving and sometimes eliminating uneven gait.

Can I still practise my sport while having treatment?
Yes, many people experience improvements in their performance during and after the 10 series of treatment, although you may experience some muscle soreness after exercising. This is because SI changes your range of movement and so the demands on your muscles will be different, and previously unused muscle groups will become available due to the realignment process.
